?ABOUT FROZEN

Produced by Disney Theatrical Productions, Frozen is a musical based on the 2013 film of the same name. The show has music and lyrics by Grammy® and Academy Award-winning writers Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez, a book by Academy® and BAFTA Award-winner Jennifer Lee, and direction by Tony® and Olivier Award winner Michael Grandage. The musical tells the story of sisters and princesses Anna and Elsa, the latter of whom has magical powers. When an accident occurs involving her powers, Elsa goes into hiding, but her city needs her and she must learn to trust in love to move forward and overcome the pain of the past.

It opened at the Buell Theatre in Denver, Colorado in August 2017 and premiered on Broadway in March 2018 at the St. James Theatre. It has since expanded to several international productions, including a West End production, which opened in September 2021.

?SYNOPSIS

Princesses Anna and Elsa of Arendelle are introduced by a Greek chorus. It becomes apparent that Elsa is in possession of magical powers and that the royal family speaks openly about them, but they are kept a secret from the people of Arendelle. One evening, to entertain her sister, Elsa creates snow in their bedroom and together they build a magical snowman, named Olaf. In the excitement, Anna is accidentally injured by Elsa’s magic. King Agnarr and Queen Iduna, their parents, ask for help from the colony of hidden folk, who are led by Grand Pabbie. Anna is healed by Grand Pabbie, who removes her memories of Elsa’s magic. Elsa begs Grand Pabbie to take away her magic, but he refuses, telling her that it is a part of her. She is given a vision by Grand Pabbie that terrifies her, as she believes that it shows that her magic will cause death. The King decides that the sisters will no longer go beyond the castle walls and when Anna tries to play with her sister, Elsa shuts her out, fearing the power of her magic. The King and Queen wish to teach Elsa to control her powers while she is young, so they travel in search of help, but while they are at sea, they die during a storm.

The day before Elsa’s coronation as Queen of Arendelle (several years having passed), Anna goes to her sister to ask if there’s anything she can do for her. Afraid of hurting her sister again, Elsa refuses to open the door to her ice-covered room. Having not seen the outside world in so long, Anna is excited for the castle gates to open. She then meets the dashing Prince Hans. Meanwhile, Elsa fears that the people of Arendelle may discover her powers and be afraid, whilst she also wrestles with wanting to reconnect with her sister. After an incident-free coronation, Elsa approaches Anna for the first time in years. Together, they have a wonderful time at the coronation and Anna saves the newly crowned Queen from having to dance with the Duke of Weselton. However, the mood changes when Anna asks about keeping the castle gates open and Elsa leaves. Anna spends the rest of the time with Hans, who she rapidly falls in love with. He proposes to her and she accepts, but when the couple asks for Elsa’s blessing she refuses, citing that they have only known one another for a day. A frustrated Anna begins to vehemently question why Elsa has shut her out for so long and Elsa accidentally uses her powers in front of the court. Branded a monster by the Duke, Elsa runs away to the North Mountain, unaware that her latent powers have caused Arendelle to plunge into an everlasting winter.

Anna leaves the kingdom to look for her sister, leaving Hans to rule Arendelle in her absence. When she reaches the mountains, still in her coronation dress and unprepared for the icy terrain, he meets ice harvester Kristoff and his reindeer Sven. Having discovered the source of the storm to be the North Mountain, she orders Kristoff to take her there. Anna changes into some winter clothes that Kristoff gives her and leaves her dress behind. As they travel, they bicker about the nature of love, in light of Anna’s recent and swift engagement. Kristoff nearly falls from a bridge they cross and Anna saves him. The pair then come across Olaf, the snowman from the sisters’ childhood, but evidently newly-made. He says that he will guide them to Elsa and begins to sing about how much he loves the summer. Back in Arendelle, Hans fears for Anna’s safety when a soldier arrives with her dress, having found it in the mountains. He gathers men to form a search party, including the Duke who plans to rein Anna in and temper her behaviour. All the while, Elsa uses her magic to build an ice castle on the North Mountain and revamp her coronation dress into a glittering, frosted gown.

Anna, Kristoff, and Olaf arrive at Wandering Oaken’s Trading Post and meet Oaken, the proprietor. Along with the Trading Post’s many other customers, Anna takes some time to enjoy the sauna. Kristoff convinces them, and Oaken, to aid in their search and Oaken provides them with supplies and Anna with a winter dress.

The party reaches the North Mountain and Anna finds Elsa. However, when Anna explains what has happened, Elsa becomes exasperated at the thought that she can’t fix the situation and in her frustration, accidentally freezes Anna’s heart. Unsure what to do, Elsa panics and throws Anna, Kristoff, and Olaf out. Seeing Anna’s hair begin to turn white, Kristoff takes her to meet his adoptive family, the hidden folk. Recognizing her as the princess, they mistake the situation and think that Kristoff is her fiancé. It is revealed by Grand Pabbie that "an act of true love" will break the spell, so Kristoff puts his love for Anna aside and rushes her back to Arendelle to be with Hans and receive true love’s kiss.

Meanwhile, Elsa ruminates in the ice castle, wondering whether she is a monster and if the storm would cease or worsen were she to die. She makes the decision to stay alive to work out how to stop the storm. At that moment, she is captured by Hans and his men, who arrived at the castle to take her. Back in Arendelle, Anna is brought to Hans who, instead of kissing her, reveals his plans to get rid of both sisters and claim the throne for himself. He imprisons Anna, leaving her to die, and she reflects upon her failings, but decides that she will not give up on love. She is freed by Olaf, and the two set off to find Kristoff outside, whose love for her is exposed by the snowman.

In front of the castle and the people of Arendelle, Else is charged with treason by Hans and sentenced to death. She escapes her shackles and flees; a blizzard in her wake. The blizzard prevents Anna and Kristoff from finding each other as conditions worsen. Elsa is accosted by Hans, who alleges that she killed Anna, causing her to break down. As she crumples to the floor, Hans goes to kill her but Anna, who had finally found Kristoff, puts herself in the way and freezes solid, saving Elsa. As Elsa weeps with grief for her sister, Anna begins to thaw, having committed "an act of true love". It dawns upon Elsa that her magic is controlled by love and with that knowledge, she manages to stop the interminable winter. Anna punches Hans and declares her love for Kristoff. Then, the two sisters embrace without fear and, in the background, the King and Queen and their younger selves appear, as a sign that everything is as it should be now.
