Some Like it Hot at Ohio Theatre

Set in Chicago during Prohibition when jazz music was all the rage, "Some Like It Hot" draws similarities to another famous Broadway musical, Chicago. Jazz elements fill the entire show as the main characters, Joe and Jerry, are struggling musicians trying to survive on speakeasy gigs. Their lives face an unexpected twist when they witness a gangster committing a crime in their mob-controlled venue and need to begin cross-dressing to protect their identities from the mob. 

Joe takes on the persona of Josephine, while Jerry disguises himself as Daphne and the two join an women-only swing band. The band's singer Sugar Kane becomes a pivotal part of their story as the two men hope to woo her without blowing their cover. The growth each character tests their strengths and teaches them surprising lessons about themselves. 

If the story sounds familiar, it's because "Some Like It Hot" is a Broadway adaptation of the 1959 film of the same name, which starred the legendary Tony Curtis, Jack Lemmon, and Marilyn Monroe. The movie itself was based on the 1953 French film Fanfare of Love and has since become one of the most groundbreaking movies in American cinema. The movie won three Golden Globe Awards and one Academy Award and was selected for the first class of 25 movies chosen by the United States National Film Registry for preservation.

The movies impressive success led it to become the foundation for the 1972 Broadway show "Sugar", and even various stage productions in the 1990s, and eventually, the 2022 Broadway adaptation. Audiences express fanfare over the show and rush to secure tickets for performances at Ohio Theatre and others across the country. "Some Like It Hot" features showtunes by Marc Shaiman and Marc Wittman, the duo behind other hit musicals like "Hairspray" and "Catch Me If You Can." 

The musical includes dazzling dance numbers and truely lovable songs like "I'm California Bound," "Baby, Let's Get Good," and "Zee Bap." The original Broadway cast earned a Grammy Award for Best Musical Theater Album.
