Occurring mainly throughout the period in the middle of the 1832 French rebellion in France, the musical is the life story of Jean Valjean, a local of Paris, France who was convicted for almost two decades because of a small act of theft for his nephew. After his release on parole, he escapes and seeks redemption as an honest man; Jean Valjean then uses a brand new persona as Monsieur Madeleine, while still hiding from the law and Javert, an officer loyal to the letter of the law and set on apprehending and bringing Jean Valjean to justice.
Happening over a period of almost two decades across the musical's 2-hour and 50-minute run, Jean Valjean becomes entangled by accidental means with numerous key people throughout the musical – Fantine is one of his factory workers who mothers an illegitimate baby; Cosette is the adoptive child of Madeleine, who is in fact Fantine’s baby; Marius, a young local part of the revolt and the true love of Cosette. Other individuals seen in the musical consist of the Thénardiers, abusive proprietors who also lead a street gang and are consumed with taking advantage of the chaos; Eponine, their child, who hides her true feelings for Marius; and comrades of the government opposition namely Gavroche, a small but talented orphan, and the revolt’s charismatic leader, Enjolras.
This diverse group of characters who are part of one struggle and their individual tales are presented beautifully on live stage, not just with the show's 19th century French-inspired costume and prop design, but distinctly with the musical being sung-through fully from beginning to end. With iconic songs like “I Dreamed a Dream” and “One Day More” as highlights of its astounding score, Les Mis is able to reveal the underlying motives hiding behind every character that comes to life in each performance.
