Hadestown is Anaïs Mitchell’s contemporary mythology adaptation of Orpheus and Eurydice’s love story. After penning the original scores and scripts in 2010, she turned to decorated stage director Rachel Chavkin for assistance in 2012. Together, the pair polished the play for public, off-Broadway showings that began in 2016. Hadestown would graduate from its humble beginnings to a coveted place on Broadway and other beloved stages in London and Canada, making it a international success.

Welcome to the Underworld, where Hades runs a profitable but harsh factory called Hadestown. The subterranean workers perform their sisyphean duties daily in hopes they’ll eventually earn their independence. Meanwhile, Orpheus and Eurydice enjoy a growing love above ground, despite the challenges of winter’s famine.

Once Hades forces his wife Persephone to return to Hadestown, an early winter escalates above-ground hungers. Eurydice, affected by dissatisfaction and influenced by the enticing promises of the Fates, lusts after the salvation Hadestown promises. She eventually travels to the underground industrial complex and agrees to work in exchange for survival.

Her contract snares her, and it’s up to Orpheus to rescue his bride-to-be. But an embittered Hades, pressured by his disquieted workforce, stands firm in the contractual agreement. Can Orpheus free his one true love with Persephone’s help? Or will Hades force Eurydice to do his bidding for eternity?

In 2019, the musical earned 14 nominations and eight awards at the 73rd Tony Awards. Hadestown would also claim a 2020 Grammy Award for Best Musical Theater. Its lofty achievements and wall-to-wall audiences demonstrate the play’s kinship with a contemporary era while combining classical elements from the past.
