Columbus, the Masterworks 2025/2026 season has already been so incredible that you’d think it impossible for the Columbus Symphony to top it, but alas, you are really in for another exceptional, hair-raising experience - a spellbinding fusion of symphony and cinema that promises to elevate masterpieces to a whole new level!
Peter Shaffer’s Amadeus - an adaptation of his 1979 stage play inspired by Alexander Pushkin’s 1830 play Mozart and Salieri - astounded the world upon its release in 1984. Not only was the Miloš Forman-directed film a massive success, grossing over $90 million, but it also landed 40 awards out of 53 nominations, including eight Academy Awards, four BAFTA Awards, four Golden Globe Awards, and four British Academy Film Awards among others. Amadeus was also ranked on the American Film Institute’s 100 Years… 100 Movies list, and was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry as being “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant”.
Amadeus tells the tale of rivalry between two 18th century Viennese composers: one is an upstanding, classy court composer who simply cannot seem to achieve the fame and admiration he longs for, and the other is a world-renowned, brilliant, and untouchable musical genius who is so deeply flawed and human - Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.
This portrait of genius, jealousy, rebellion against the divine, and vengeance is profoundly enhanced by the breathtaking music of Mozart, and the Columbus Symphony’s live performance of the score alongside the screening of the iconic film is slated to take it to a whole new level - a place where just music, or just cinema can’t go alone. Expect to have a powerful, emotionally moving experience like never before; expect to see the four-decade old masterpiece in a whole new light; expect to feel the marriage of sight and sound in bone and soul - and expect to fall in love with Mozart’s musical genius even more!
