The Masterworks 2025/2026 season has been exceptional - and things are still about to get a whole lot more exciting with the special treats the Columbus Symphony has up their sleeves!
Musical director and conductor Rossen Milanov has put together an extraordinary programme - and the Columbus Symphony is set to tantalize the musical tastebuds of music lovers with the wondrous sounds of Leoš Janáček’s Taras Bulba, George Gershwin’s Rhapsody In Blue featuring Columbus Symphony pianist Caroline Hong, and Sergei Rachmaninoff’s lush, dramatic Symphony No. 3 in A minor, Op. 44.
Czech composer Leoš Janáček’s Taras Bulba is a musically vivid and dynamic rhapsody of heroism and the ultimate sacrifice, inspired by three episodes of Nikolai Gogol’s tales of war and death. Since its premier in 1921, Taras Bulba gained huge popularity, becoming one of Janáček’s most famous works. Despite its “blood-stained” intensity and dark subject matter, Taras Bulba creates within the listener a catharsis and feelings of life-affirmation and sublimity.
There are few works that can hold the candle to George Gershwin’s iconic Rhapsody In Blue when it comes to sweeping lyricism and a jazzy flair. The work is a feast of rhythm and melody that explores the thin line between classical music and modern styles. Gershwin himself explained it best: “I heard it as a sort of musical kaleidoscope of America, of our vast melting pot, of our unduplicated national pep, of our metropolitan madness.” Ever since its premiere in 1924, Rhapsody In Blue has been a favorite among music lovers.
Sergei Rachmaninoff’s music is known to have the capacity to captivate hearts and stir souls. Oozing with dramatic, cinematic power, great lyrical depth, and an incredible energetic drive, the Symphony No. 3 in A minor, Op. 44 balances fiery passion with tender emotion perfectly. It showcases the full sonic palette of the orchestra - from deep strings to brilliant brass, and is an absolute, total must-see for any music lover!
