Masterworks 2025/2026 Season

If it’s charming, passionate music that truly transports the audience to a place of endless gorgeous melodies, wonderful soundscapes, and evocative beauty you’ve been craving, consider it done!

The world-renowned Columbus Symphony, especially known for their precision, heart, musical excellence, and passionate performances, under the baton of musical director and conductor Rossen Milanov has gotten yet another wonderful musical journey lined up for you as part of the annual Cardinal Health Masterworks Season 2025/2026, this time presenting a programme comprising Four Dance Episodes from Aaron Copland’s iconic ballet Rodeo, Florence Price’s elegant Violin Concerto No. 2, and Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 1 in G Minor, Op. 13 (Winter Daydreams)

Four Dance Episodes from 'Rodeo'

Aaron Copland’s iconic Rodeo is a ballet bursting with pure Americana spirit, catchy melodies perfectly blending folk tunes with his signature crisp, modern orchestrations, lively rhythms, and evocative portrayal of the American West. From the fanfares and popular Cowgirl’s theme of Buckaroo Holiday to the wistful, lovesick musings of Corral Nocturne, from the gorgeous solo parts and rustic feel of Saturday Night Waltz to the recurring Bonaparte’s Retreat melody and toe-tapping nature of the Hoedown, Rodeo is a pure celebration of Americana spirit and vibrant energy.

Violin Concerto No. 2

The performance of Florence Price’s soul-stirring Violin Concerto No. 2 will be headed up by violinist Melissa White, known for her exceptionally “elegant and thoughtful” performing style. Few works capture the sounds of American classical music quite like Violin Concerto No. 2 with its wonderful blend of African-American spirituals and European Romanticism. The work oozes with lush melodies, bold entrances, technical challenges, folk-like themes, tenderness, and a marvellous earthy quality.

Symphony No. 1 in G Minor, Op. 13 (Winter Daydreams)

Russian maestro Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 1 in G minor, Op. 13 (Winter Daydreams) is one of the composer’s lesser known and underrated masterpieces - and it utterly deserves every bit of the light that the Columbus Symphony is slated to shine on it. The work is a charming musical journey through dreamy winter landscapes, filled with great emotional depth, gorgeous, soaring melodies, poignant beauty, the signature Russian melancholy the composer is known and adored for, and is a true reflection of Tchaikovsky’s youthful genius. From the delicate woodwind lines in the first movement Dreams of a Winter Journey to the seductive and endlessly stunning melodic lines of the second movement Land of Desolation, Land of Mists, to the engaging waltz-like trio of the third movement and the powerful dynamic contrasts of the finale, Symphony No. 1 in G minor, Op. 13 (Winter Daydreams) is a musical experience unlike any other.
