Cardinal Health Masterworks Season 2025/2026

There’s plenty of musical brilliance to go around with the Columbus Symphony. The Cardinal Health Masterworks season 2025/2026 has been filled with some of the best and most iconic works from yesteryear to today, some lesser known gems that shine up like the brightest diamonds, and even some world premieres. And this time around, three works by three iconic composers, and the return of one of America’s most prominent and promising up-and-coming pianists - all for the price of one!

The programme for the evening includes performances of Beethoven’s Egmont Overture from Egmont, Op. 84, Robert Schumann’s Symphony No. 4 in D minor, Op. 120, and Johannes Brahms’ Piano Concerto No. 1 in D minor, Op. 15.

Beethoven: Egmont Overture

German composer Ludwig van Beethoven composed incidental music pieces for Goethe’s brilliant, powerful play Egmont, comprising an Overture, followed by a set of nine works for soprano, male narrator, and full orchestra. The programmatic work is filled with dramatic storytelling, depicting the Count of Egmont’s struggle through oppression to eventual triumph. Beethoven is especially known for his excellence in capturing mood, and the Egmont Overture is the perfect example thereof, going from somber openings to fiery, energetic sections.

Schumann: Symphony No. 4

Robert Schumann’s Symphony No. 4 in D Minor Op. 120 is well-known and adored for its innovative, seamless flow, achieved by linking the movements together through recurring themes. The work captures the imagination like no other, oozing with signature romantic passion and energy. From its dramatic shifts between dark, brooding passages and vibrant folk-like melodies to the rhythmic vitality, from its powerful climaxes to the stunning lyricism, this work is something any and all music lovers should experience live at least once in their life.

Brahms: Piano Concerto No. 1

Johannes Brahms’ monumental Piano Concerto No. 1 in D Minor Op. 15 is notorious for its technical complexity and the virtuosic skill it requires from the solo pianist, and its epic struggle between the piano and the orchestra. The work is filled to the brim with dramatic contrasts, great emotional depth, passion, lush melodies, and moments of vulnerability - from its thundering opening to the gentler, more intricate passages. Maxim Lando will be returning to the Columbus Symphony to perform as soloist in this exceptional work.
