Giuseppe Verdi has gone down in music history as one of the greatest opera composers of all time, and it is easy to understand why: some of the world’s most popular operatic repertoire had its origins in the creative mind of this musical genius - from Il Trovatore and Rigoletto to Aida and Nabucco. However, to date, one of this maestro’s most performed operas, is his masterpiece, La Traviata. With its origins firmly rooted in Alexandre Dumas fils’s play La Dame aux camélias and a stunning Italian libretto by Francesco Maria Piave, the world was first introduced to this twisting love story in 1853 at the La Fenice opera house in Venice. La Traviata’s deep-rooted passion, intelligent writing, hard-hitting themes, and breathtaking music made it an instant favorite among theatre-goers, and the source of many modern takes on the classic tale, such as Pretty Woman and Moulin Rouge!.

Under the masterful baton of maestro Rossen Milanov, assistant conductor Elias Miller, Ohio’s renowned Columbus Symphony, and Opera Columbus, the iconic tale will be brought to life once more, in Italian, as it is meant to be performed, with English captions for the comfort of the audience. The heart-wrenching tale of social pressures, class divisions, obsessions with reputation, judgement, sacrifice, and at the root of it all - love, is delivered pitch-perfectly and staged to absolute perfection by the highly accomplished and renowned companies, under the direction of Eve Summer. 

The stellar Opera Columbus cast, superbly accompanied by the Columbus Symphony, boasts incredible vocal agility - warm tones, emotional expressiveness, exquisite gentleness, great dynamic control, immaculate sensitivity and sense of line, and go from impressive high note to deep, restrained intensity without effort, ultimately creating beautifully music that crawls under one’s skin quickly. 

The Columbus Symphony’s revival of Verdi’s timeless opera is without a doubt the one theatre piece everybody needs to see this season.
