Fanny Brice’s tumultuous relationships takes centerstage in this classic musical, but the events leading up to stardom and later, her second marriage to Nicky Armstein, an incarcerated notorious gambler and con artist. As he is released from prison, Fanny tries to navigate her life with her newly freed husband. This production takes on the titular events that led her to star in the highly anticipated musical but also on circumstances that led her to fall head over heels for Nicky. Fanny was preparing for her upcoming new project, Zigfeld Follies, where she met Nicky but also develops a friendship with dancer Eddie. As she awaits the monumental return of her ex-convict husband, Fanny reminisces on past events – like the role that catapulted her to stardom, but also events that led to her husband’s arrest for embezzlement.
Funny Girl opened on Broadway in 1964 and completed over 1,000 performances across two legendary theaters. The role of Fanny was played by Hollywood and Broadway superstar Barbra Streisand and Sydney Chaplin with original direction from Garson Kanin and choreography by Carol Haney. A London’s West End version was then mounted in 1966, followed by an Australian and U.S. Tour. In 2016, a West End revival also come out followed by a U.K. Tour. In 2022, Funny Girl made is phenomenal return to Broadway with a National U.S. Tour following one year later. This 2025, Funny Girl takes on a massive North American trek with over 20 stops in major cities.
“Filled with talent!” – The Cosmic Circus
This revival is given a whole new take but also an homage to the original with brilliant direction by Tony Award-winning director Michael Mayer, choreography by Ellenore Scott and tap choreography by Ayode Casel. The original music by Jule Styne and lyrics by Bob Merril continue to make waves on this riveting revival. Moreover, Isobel Lennart’s book has been given a fantastic rendition by Tony Award-winning playwright Harvey Fierstein. The production is given a remarkable update by bringing in some of the most talented designers in the Broadway circuit, including Tony winner David Zinn on scenic, Tony Award-winner Susan Hilferty on costume, Kevin Adams on lighting, and Tony nominated Brian Ronan and Cody Spencer on sound.
The original 1964 production of Funny Girl secured eight Tony nominations, including Best Musical. Over five decades later, the West End revival secured a Whatsonstage Awards for Best Musical Revival. In 2023, the Broadway revival received three Drama Desk nominations, and three Drama League Awards.
