THE PLOT
During the Prohibition Era, Sweet Sue landed in jail after a raid in a Chicago speakeasy. After being bailed out, she decided to change her scenario by starting an all-female band. Saxophonist Joe and bass player Jerry are running away from the mob and decided to join Sweet Sue’s band posing as women. The band will be going on a U.S tour, hence, this is their opportunity to get away. However, Joe and Jerry meet the band’s singer Sugar, a young, gorgeous lady who has a weakness for falling for male band members, particularly saxophonists. As the duo in disguise fight for Sugar’s attention and run away from gangsters, while the FBI is on a lookout, a series of hilarious events ensues. Will their true identities be discovered? BACKGROUND
Some Like It Hot is based on the 1959 film with the same title. The stage adaptation was supposed to premiered in Chicago for the first time in 2022. After a cancelled trial run due to the Covid 19 pandemic, the production made its way to Broadway. The New York cast included Christian Borle as Joe/Josephine, J. Harrison Ghee as Jerry/Dpahne, Adrianna Hicks as Sugar, and Kevin Del Aguia as Osgood. The musical took over residency on Broadway for over a year before hitting the road for a highly anticipated U.S. tour. In 2023, the dates for the tour were plotted. After completing a highly successful run in 2024, the West End production was mounted in 2025.
In 2023, Some Lilke It Hot won four Tony Awards out of 13 nominations. Over at the Drama Desk Awards, the production won in all the eight categories it was nominated including Outstanding Musical. Other notable awards include a Drama League Award, five Outer Critics Circle Award, and a Grammy Award for Best Musical Theatre Album.
CREATIVE & CAST
Some Like It Hot delivers top caliber direction and chorepgrahy from Broadway legend Casey Nicholaw. The multi award winning director and choreographer led a fantastic team of creatives, including Scott Pask on scenic design, Gregg Barnes on costume, Natasha Katz on lighting, and Brian Ronan on sound design. REVIEWS
The musical scored a ton of incredible reviews from fans and critics. Theater authorities also gave great words in their reviews upon seeing the Broadway production. Art Fuse called Some Like It Hot a “significant stand out” for its joyous and tuneful production. “It takes the admittedly formidable original in new and legitimate directions and creates a stand-alone piece that’s almost as funny and, in its own way, just as enjoyable.” In the end, the review concluded, “Some Like It Hot gives audience members a grand old time.”
“New perspectives bring sizzle to this bright Broadway musical,” Variety wrote as their headline. “This stage production boasts swell performances, dandy twists and turns, razzmatazz dancing and a whole lotta energy,” the reviewer added. Over in Entertanment Weekly, the musical received outstanding remarks, “Nobody’s perfect, but this new production comes pretty close.” The writer recalled how the film was actually close to perfection, but the musical is also an incredible piece of work, “This new production expands on that theme, diversifies the players, and shakes up the story so it still feels like Some Like It Hot, but the result is something that can stand and high-kick on its own.”
