Synopsis

The timeless, yet still relevant plot of The Sound Of Music, as masterfully written by Howard Lindsay and Russel Crouse, is based on Maria von Trapp’s 1949 memoir, The Story of the Trapp Family Singers.

Maria, a free-spirited and energetic nun who simply adores music, takes on the position as governess for the seven children of the widowed Captain Georg von Trapp. While living with the family, she falls in love with the children, and eventually Captain von Trapp. In spite of the family facing many difficulties – from the the romance blossoming between the engaged-to-be-married Captain von Trapp to the imminent Nazi-threat resulting in the Captain being forced to accept a commission in the German Navy following the 1938 Anschluss, from Maria being torn between her love interest and her decision to become a nun to the effects of the children lacking a mother-figure in their lives – Maria brings music and happiness back to the family.

“The Sound Of Music delivers exactly the responses it promises: you’ll laugh, you’ll cry, and you’ll be humming ‘My Favorite Things’ for weeks afterwards.” – The Guardian

Creative Team And Cast

One of Broadway’s most accomplished directors Jack O’Brien is the mastermind behind this season’s run of The Sound Of Music at the Ohio Theatre, Columbus. The three-time Tony Award winner that has massively successful musicals under his name, such as Hairspray, The Full Monty, and Into The Woods, promised that he is not “trotting out your mother’s version” of the internationally adored musical. Instead, you can expect it to be stripped of all the kitsch elements that have attached itself to the musical over the six decades it has been on stage, boasting a fresh, new approach that goes straight to the sweet spot.

Audiences can look forward to seeing esteemed vocalist and performer Cayleigh Capaldi in the much sought-after role of Maria, Broadway regular Kevin Earley as Captain Georg von Trapp, Christiane Noll as Mother Abbess, Nicholas Rodriguez as Max Detweiler, Kate Loprest as Elsa Schraeder, Ariana Ferch as young Liesl, and Ian Coursey as Rolf.

The stellar cast oozes professionalism, prowess, and immaculate stagecraft – from the oldest nun right down to little Gretl von Trapp, the youngest. Expect voices that bless your ears, stagecraft that will leave you breathless, and have you leaving the theatre with a full heart, a soothed mind, and a little bit in love.

“The loveliest musical imaginable.” – New York World-Telegram and Sun

History And Legacy

When esteemed composers Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II, alongside renowned playwrights Howard Lindsay and Russel Crouse, and Broadway producers Leland Hayward and Richard Halliday, premiered what would become their very last musical in 1959 at Broadway’s Lunt-Fontanne Theatre, nobody could have imagined that The Sound Of Music would end up becoming one of the world’s favorites. The original Broadway production featuring Mary Martin and Theodore Bikel catapulted right to the top, defying all expectations and landing multiple awards, including five Tony Awards, a Theatre World Award, and an Outer Critics Circle Special Award. Since then, there have been many revivals and it is regularly performed around the globe, along with a 1965 award-winning film adaptation featuring Julie Andrews as Maria and Christopher Plummer as Captain von Trapp.

“The ‘Sound Of Music’ has a strangely gentle charm that is wonderfully endearing.” – The New York Post
