Unless you live under a rock, the story of The Lion King is one of the most well-known and most beloved epics of modern times. It features a young lion cub who runs away from home after his father is murdered by his evil uncle. Simba was supposed to have the perfect life with his loving father, Mufasa, who was wise and caring. But things take a turn when the evil uncle, Scar, wants to take the Kingdom for himself. After dying in a stampede set by Scar and his pack of hyenas, Mufasa passes away and leaves a bewildered young Simba. Scar comes to blame Simba for the death of his brother and urges him to run away. The young cub escapes the kingdom and finds solace in a faraway jungle. He meets new friends, Timon and Pumba, who show him you can forget your past. But as Simba turns into a young adult Lion, he encounters someone from his past, his childhood friend Nala. The Lion King musical is based on the 1994 film of the same name. The show uses the original music by Elton John and lyrics by Tim Rice. The Broadway production added some more music from producers and composers Lebo M, Mark Mancina, Jay Rifkin, Tsidii Le Loka and Hans Zimmer. Fans who have seen the film can look forward to a plethora of familiar hits, such as “Circle of Life,” “I Just Can’t Wait to Be King,” “Hakuna Matata,” and “Can You Feel the Love Tonight.” Much of the music was rearranged to incorporate authentic African influences. A trial run was held in Minneapolis in 1997. That same year, the musical opened on Broadway. The production featured outstanding direction by Julie Taymor, choreography by Garth Fagan, scenic design by Richard Hudson, lighting design by Donald Holder, and mask and puppet design by Taymor and Michael Curry.
To this day, the Broadway production is still ongoing and has been recorded as the third longest-running and highest-grossing musical of all time. Over the years, the touring production would circle the U.K., the U.S., and across the world. The musical also opened in London’s West End, in Australia, and in France. The Lion King was also recorded to have been viewed by over 112 million people worldwide. From 2023 to 2024, The Lion King once again will hit the road in North America. The shows, which kicked off during the summer of 2023, will extend all the way to the summer of 2024.
The Broadway production of The Lion King received numerous awards, including eight Drama Desk Awards, a Theatre World Award, and five Tony Awards. The London production won two Laurence Olivier Awards, while the French production won a Moliere Award. In 2004, the Australian production bagged four Helpmann Awards, including Best Musical.
