Columbus, you are in for a wonderful evening with the Columbus Symphony, headed up by musical director and conductor Rossen Milanov, bringing you the magical gift of live music you won’t find anywhere else!

Pianist Maxim Lando will be making his debut with the Columbus Symphony Orchestra with the magnificent original version of Mussorgsky’s "Pictures at an Exhibition" for solo piano, as well as the enchanting Tchaikovsky Piano Concert No. 2.

Russian composer Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s second piano concerto is a work of significance. It embarks on a different path than any of Tchaikovsky’s earlier works, containing original structural features. Instead of integrating the piano and orchestra throughout, the work contains longer solo parts for both piano and orchestra, with two fiendishly difficult cadenzas – not at the end, like in the traditional manner, but rather in the middle. Throughout, the work has an extremely high level of virtuosity.

Audiences are in for a real treat with the rare opportunity to experience two versions of Modest Mussorgsky’s "Pictures at an Exhibition" back to back – firstly the piano composition composed exactly 150 years ago, followed by a lesser-known orchestration by Russian conductor Gorchakov. Differences in orchestration in this particular version involve not only the choices of instrumentation, but also dynamics and articulation. In addition, Gorchakov restored one of the “Promenade” movements that are omitted in the more popular orchestrations.

"Pictures at an Exhibition" celebrates an exhibition of the works of Viktor Hartmann, connected with “Promenade” movements, reflecting the visitor’s feelings as they move from painting to painting. The work breathes musical life into the iconic paintings, depicting them vividly – from “Gnomus”, “The Old Castle”, and “Bydlo” to “Ballet Of The Unhatched Chicks”, “Samuel Goldenberg und Schmuyle”, and “Limoges”; from “The Market: Big News”, “Catacombs”, and “The Hut on Fowl’s Legs: Baba Yaga” to “The King’s Gate In The Ancient City Of Kiev”.

The historic Ohio Theatre Columbus is a magnificent 2,791-seat proscenium theatre with a rich history of world-class entertainment. Seating is spread across four levels: the orchestra floor, loge, mezzanine, and balcony for optimal viewing, so whatever your preference, there is a seat perfect for you and yours!
